Aaron Newman on climb on THE BIG ONE, the granddaddy of all, Mt. Everest (from the Nepal side)

    October 2019 Meeting

We will meet on Tuesday evening October 8th at the business center of the company Emerge at 7 pm.  Hope you will reserve that date.  No need to respond if you will be attending —  just show up.  There is no admittance fee.  Refer to link below for Google map.

Aaron Newman will be presenting his climb on THE BIG ONE, the granddaddy of all, Mt. Everest (from the Nepal side).  Be sure to catch this!

In the spring of 2019, Aaron Newman attempted to climb Everest, the tallest mountain in the world at 29,029. While not the hardest climb out there, it is one of the most coveted and the journey of a lifetime.

This was the culmination of a decade of progressively climbing higher mountains, starting in the Adirondacks and taking him thru seven continents along the journey. Hear his stories of challenges, suffering, failure, success, and adventure. He will share with us stories including altitude sickness, "jelly belly," rock slides, and lost toes.

Come to hear how this story ends and what’s next.

  • October 2004 Meeting

We plan to meet at Stu Milligan’s house on October 11th at 7:30 pm.  Kevin Flynn will be featured and he will share his recent successful endeavor and summit ascent of the big one, Mt. Everest.  Kevin has a goal to summit all of the high points on the seven continents.  He has done all of them, except for Vinson Massif in the Antarctic and Carstenz in Irian Jaya of Australasia, currently off limits to climbers.  Kevin has the distinction of being the first person actually living in the Rochester area at the time of his Everest climb, when he made it to the top of the world.  He left Rochester on March 19th and returned on May 21st. He went with the International Mountain Guides Non-guided Expedition under the direction of Mark Tucker.  He and four of his climbing mates, and two Sherpas, reached the summit at 14:30 on Saturday, May 15th.  Late, but not terribly so.  He has prepared a DVD which we will watch on a large TV monitor.  Below are some of the pictures he has.

Those who wish to join RRISCC officially by paying the annual dues amount of $10.00 can do so for our new fiscal year September 1, 2004 through August 31, 2005 by sending a check to Henry Hamlin.  His address can be found here.  The advantages are that dues-paying members are entitled to a 15% discount at area outdoor stores, such as Snow Country, EMS and Get Out and Stay Out.  Also, dues-paying members can borrow library materials belonging to the club and/or Stu Milligan as listed here.  A membership card will be mailed to you for use at area outdoor stores.

Directions to Stu’s home at 35 Devonshire Court:

If coming from I-390, get off at the Chili Avenue exit and turn left toward the city. You will go over the canal bridge almost immediately. Go through three lights (hopefully not while they’re red) and go one block short of the fourth light (Gardiner Pk. on the left and Thurston Rd. on the right), then turn right on Salina St. & follow Salina to the end, which literally dumps into my driveway. My house is the yellow and white one.  If coming west down Chili Av., turn left one block after the Thurston interchange on Salina St.  If coming down Thurston Rd., turn left one big block before the Thurston-Chili interchange onto Devonshire Ct. and go a few houses to where Salina St. comes in from the right – house is on the left side.   If coming some other way, you’re on your own.  Chili Avenue is under construction and is currently one-way toward the city from the I-390 exit, so if you’re coming the other direction, you will have to use other roads, such as Arnett Park Blvd. or West Avenue.

Please mark your calendars for this special presentation by Kevin who not only has grand ideas, but doggedly realizes them one by one.  Hope to see most of you at this meeting.

Here are some of Kevin’s Mt. Everest pictures.  Aren’t they great?  Click on the photos to get larger images.

  • October 2002 Meeting

    at 198 Dickinson Rd

The RRISCC October meeting is scheduled to be held at Peter Bushnell’s house on the 14th at 7:30 pm. That is a Monday night.  Pete and two eagle scout friends, Harry Sauerhafer and Paul Sickles, flew to Katmandu, then on to Lukla, Nepal where they began their trek following the infamous river, the Dudh Kosi up to the Khumbu glacier and into Gorak Shep and on to the Mt. Everest basecamp. This will be a slide show of quality pictures lasting about 40 minutes to an hour.  Afterwards, they flew on to Singapore and will include a few slides from there.  So, if the Himalayas are among your favs, this one is for you!  They made this trekking expedition in October of 1999.

Since dues were scheduled for collection during the September meeting, that’ll carry over to the October meeting. Also, the member list posted on a sub-page of our home page will not be purged of non-dues-paying persons until the end of November.

    Location

Pete lives at 198 Dickinson Rd. in Webster.   Here are directions:

Take I-590N and cross over the Bay bridge, then exit right onto Bay Rd.  Take a left  onto Volk Rd.  (next to white and blue store ) and go to the end and take a right onto DeWitt Rd.  At about a 1/2 mile you will see DeWitt school on the right and Woodruff St. on the left.  Turn left onto Woodruff, and at the end, turn left onto Dickinson Rd.  Come around the bend in the road and down a small hill and look up to your right.  He lives up a steep driveway (where else would a hiker live ?).  Look for a sign on the light pole.

Trust you’ll be interested in this and make a real effort to be on hand.
