January 2000 Retreat

Date
Friday 21 January 2000
Speaker
Tom Connelly
Topic
their recent climbing ventures at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky

The RRISCC January winter retreat is scheduled to be held at Jon Freckleton’s get-away home in Dansville on the weekend of January 21st to the 23rd. (This has been changed from the earlier scheduled weekend of the 14th to the 16th)  Arrive anytime after supper on Friday, or come anytime on Saturday.  Weather permitting, we could do some cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking or ice climbing. Bring your toys and tools.  Also, bring some board games, etc.  Tom Connelly, Bryan Howell & Kerstin Gunter will be sharing slides of their recent climbing ventures at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky.  If you have some slides or videos of outdoor adventures you’d like to share, bring them along.

As to food, bring supper dishes and lunch food when you come.  Jon will be serving oatmeal and toast for breakfast, so if you don’t want that, bring your own breakfast foods as well.

Sleeping facilities will be assigned by Jon on a first signed-up, first-served basis.  The options are two single bunks, a crazy loft double bed in a small unheated bunk room, a double bed, a futone, two couches, a loft double bed in the heated cabin (tends to be very hot), an unheated attached garage, a leanto nearby, and, of course, the floor of the cabin.  Contact Jon to reserve your sleeping territory.  His e-mail address is:   jefeme@rit.edu
His home phone number is 872-1758.  If you want to write to him, his address is in the web sub-page under the list of members.

Jon’s home-away-from-home, in case you didn’t know,  lacks creature comforts.  The plumbing consists of an outhouse.  Women will be shown how to obtain a bucket of water from an outside hose in order to flush the toilet.  Men will use the outhouse or else help to kill some unwanted outdoor vegetation – but don’t tell the enviro-conscious Sierra Club folks about any of this.  Bring a shovel in case you need to shovel a place to park your cars.  If you need to be reached by phone while there, the number is (607) 295-7457.  Jon’s place can be found by following these directions:

Take I-390 to the second exit in Dansville, route 36.  Turn right on route 36 (south) and go a short distance crossing a crossroad to Sandy Hill Road, which is a Y intersection to the left.  There is a sign for S. Dansville on the right side of the road pointing to that turn.  Proceed 4.4 miles to a green cabin with brown trim on the right.

Hope you can make this special event. Come prepared for anything or come unprepared and just relax.
