The RRISCC January winter retreat is scheduledto be held at Jon Freckleton’s get-away home in Dansville on the thirdweekend of January, the 12th to the 14th. Arriveanytime before or after supper on Friday, or come anytime on Saturday. Bring a shovel with you. If you can come some time in the afternoon, Jon could use a hand shoveling out the driveway. Last year he got stuck doing it all himself.
Weatherpermitting, we could do some cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hikingor ice climbing. Bring your toys and tools. Also, bring some boardgames, etc. If you have some slides or videos of outdoor adventuresyou’d like to share, bring them along.
As to food, bring pre-cooked pass-along supper dishes (that just need re-warming) and lunch foodwhen you come. Basically, keep it simple. If someone would like to coordinate the dishes to insure we get complete meals, let Jon know, or else it’ll just have to be pure potluck. Jon will be serving oatmeal and toast for breakfast,so if you don’t want that, bring your own breakfast foods as well.
Sleeping facilities will be assigned by Jon ona first signed-up, first-served basis. The options are two singlebunks, a crazy loft double bed in a small unheated bunk room, a doublebed, a futone, two couches, a loft double bed in the heated cabin (tendsto be very hot), an unheated attached garage, a leanto nearby, and, ofcourse, the floor of the cabin. Contact Jon to reserve your sleepingterritory. He will be back in Rochester after the new year. His e-mail address is:
His home phone number is 872-1758. If you want to write to him,his address is in the web sub-page under the list of members.
Jon’s home-away-from-home, in case you didn’t know, lacks creature comforts. The plumbing consists of an outhouse. Women will be shown how to obtain a bucket of water from an outside hosein order to flush the toilet. Men will use the outhouse or else helpto kill some unwanted outdoor vegetation – but don’t tell the enviro-conscious Sierra Club folks about any of this. Jon uses a neighbor’s artesian well, so if you’re not comfortable with that, bring your purifiers or your own water. Look at it this way, Jon has been using it for 35 years now and he’s very much still with us. Maybe that’s the secret to his youthful energy? If you need to be reached byphone while there, the number is (607) 295-7457. Jon’s place canbe found by following these directions:
Take I-390 to the second exit in Dansville,Route 36. Turn right on Route 36 (south) and go a short distance past roads to the left and the right to Sandy Hill Road, which is a Y intersection to the left. If you get to a building on the right that sells ATVs and pumps, you have gone too far. There is a sign for South Dansville on the right side of the road pointing to that turn. Proceed 4.4 miles to a green cabin with brown trim on the right at 9917 Sandy Hill Rd. There is no mail box, and a row of Spruce conceal the driveway and the cabin when your’re directly in front of it. It is suggested that folks back into the driveway for a safer exit in the event of inclement weather.
Hope you can make this special event. Last yearwe had a great time. Come prepared for anything or come unprepared andjust relax.
